Scuba Diving – An Excellent Vacation Activity

Vacation Time is Precious

Vacations are what we look forward to all year. Vacations are times that make life worth living. They fill our memory books, photo albums and twitter accounts. They come and go all too quickly and we feel the pressure to get all the good stuff crammed in. So why is scuba diving an excellent vacation activity?

Let’s explore……

Today’s youth are evolving at a scarily fast pace. What captivated a young person’s mind in the past is so different to what captivates them today. Many parents feel disconnected from their little ones and vacations seem to exacerbate the distance that may have grown between them. Many find it difficult to participate in activities that both they and their children enjoy and are physically able to do. Holidays become a constant battle between spending quality time within your family unit and what you consider to be the perfect vacation. What you want to do is not necessarily what they want to, especially when it comes to activities. So what can you do? Do you leave them with a babysitter at the hotel while you go off and explore? Do you drag them along on a trip only to have them moan at you constantly? Do you ever use the sentence “this is a FAMILY holiday and WE WILL DO THINGS TOGETHER!”?

Connect with your kids through activities: Scuba Diving is the perfect solution

Scuba diving is the perfect solution.

Scuba diving is a great family bonding activity because it is open to anyone over the age of 8, and can be performed by individuals varying greatly in physical fitness. It is seen as a cool sport that will be Facebook, Twitter and Instagram worthy. It is something that children will want the world to know they have done and therefore is worthy of their attention. I make it sound like today’s youth are nothing but narcissistic versions of ourselves. I do not mean to. I am merely pointing out that today’s youth have so many new platforms of social conformity to adhere to that we need to understand them and evolve with them.

Scuba diving checks all the boxes.

Creating Memories Together

The most important part of scuba diving as a family activity, is the experiences parents and their children will have together underwater and that will create lifelong memories. Swimming alongside a turtle, watching a school of fish, or coming up close to a moray eel will create a bond that most non-diving families will never have. Young divers will also gain a greater appreciation for the environment and will be more likely to grow into environmentally friendly adults. Another bonus is that you will burn around 500 calories on every scuba dive. Forget the gym, the diving diet is the most fun you can have – trust me!!

Finally, the education that parents and children will gain together through hands-on experience underwater is something that simply can’t be gained through a text book or from watching videos online.  Seeing how an underwater system works together, or how a predator catches its prey with one’s own eyes can be truly life changing. Families who experience marine life and marine systems first-hand through scuba diving have a deeper connection and understanding of the ocean and its ecosystems than non-divers.

Family Scuba Diving Vacations

Scuba diving vacations offer an opportunity for families to spend more time together

Most families take vacations together, and often parents find themselves having to hire sitters to watch their children while they go off and enjoy their adult activities. Scuba diving vacations offer an opportunity for families to spend more time together and experience twice as much, because they can explore what is beneath the surface in addition to enjoying land-based activities.
